Geneva Taxi Prices — Complete 2026 Guide
Before you book a ride in Geneva, you want to know exactly what you will pay. Fair enough — price transparency is how you plan a trip without stress. This guide covers every aspect of Geneva taxi prices: airport transfers, city fares, ski resort shuttles, surcharges, payment methods and cancellation terms. At TaxiGVA we work with fixed prices quoted in advance, so you know the total before you get in the car — no meter running, no surprise at drop-off.
Geneva has two parallel pricing systems. Licensed street taxis use a regulated meter (base fare, price per kilometre, waiting time). Private-hire cars (VTC / chauffeur service) such as TaxiGVA work on flat rates agreed when you book. For short city rides either system works; for airport transfers, ski runs or intercity trips, fixed rates almost always come out cheaper — and they remove the risk of a traffic-jam bill that keeps climbing.

How Geneva street-taxi meters work
Street taxis in the Canton of Geneva follow a meter tariff set by cantonal regulation. The current structure is simple once you know the components:
- Base fare (pickup): CHF 6.30 as soon as you get in
- Price per kilometre: CHF 3.20/km in the city (day tariff)
- Night surcharge: +CHF 0.60/km from 21:00 to 06:00
- Waiting time: CHF 69/hour at a red light, in traffic or if you ask the driver to wait
- Luggage over 15 kg: CHF 1.50 per extra piece
- Extra passenger beyond the fourth: CHF 5 flat
In practice, a 4 km ride from Geneva Airport to the Jet d’Eau sits between CHF 35 and CHF 55 depending on time of day and traffic. A cross-city ride from Eaux-Vives to the Pâquis runs CHF 20 to CHF 30. These ranges hold when traffic is normal; on a Friday evening the meter can easily add 30 % in waiting time.
Why TaxiGVA uses fixed prices
A private-hire car (VTC) is not a street taxi — we cannot pick you up with a raised hand on the pavement, and we do not use a cantonal meter. Every trip is booked in advance with a flat rate confirmed by email before you travel. That rate does not change if traffic is heavy, if your flight is late, or if the driver takes a detour to avoid an accident. You pay exactly what was quoted.
For most airport and intercity trips this works out cheaper than a metered taxi, because we price on distance and vehicle class rather than time spent on the road. It is also the only honest way to quote a Geneva → Chamonix or Geneva → Zermatt transfer, where a meter would rack up three to four hours of stop-and-go driving and hand you a four-figure bill.
Airport transfer prices — Geneva Airport (GVA)
Geneva Airport is 4 km from the city centre and sits right next to the motorway network. Our Geneva airport taxi transfer covers every arrival: we track your flight number, adjust pickup automatically if you are delayed, and wait inside the terminal with a name sign. Fixed prices from the airport:
| Destination from GVA | Mercedes E-Class (1–3 pax) | Mercedes V-Class (1–7 pax) | Mercedes S-Class VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geneva city centre | CHF 100 | CHF 130 | CHF 180 |
| Nyon | CHF 150 | CHF 180 | CHF 220 |
| Lausanne | CHF 280 | CHF 320 | CHF 380 |
| Montreux | CHF 380 | CHF 420 | CHF 500 |
| Chamonix (FR) | CHF 320 | CHF 380 | CHF 480 |
| Megève / Courchevel | CHF 420 / CHF 680 | CHF 480 / CHF 780 | CHF 600 / CHF 950 |
| Verbier | CHF 550 | CHF 620 | CHF 780 |
| Zermatt (Täsch) | CHF 850 | CHF 980 | CHF 1,200 |
Return trips are quoted at roughly 1.8× the one-way fare (we do not charge twice — you get a loyalty discount on the return leg). All airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, which covers passport control, baggage claim and the walk to the terminal exit.
City rides and short trips inside Geneva
For a short ride inside the canton — hotel to restaurant, Cornavin station to a meeting, Plainpalais to the United Nations — a metered street taxi is usually the fastest answer because you can flag one on the pavement. Expect CHF 15 to CHF 35 for most intra-city trips during the day. Our pre-booked service starts at CHF 80 for city minimum, so it only makes sense if you need a specific pickup time (early meeting, medical appointment, train you cannot miss) or a specific vehicle class (V-Class for a group, S-Class for a VIP guest).
Night taxi prices in Geneva
Between 21:00 and 06:00 the cantonal meter adds a night surcharge of CHF 0.60/km. On a 20 km ride that adds around CHF 12. Our Geneva night taxi service runs on the same flat rates day or night — there is no 21:00 jump on our pricing. If your flight lands at 02:30 or you need a 05:00 pickup for a morning flight, the price stays the same as at 14:00.
Ski resort transfer prices
Ski transfers are where fixed prices really show their value. A metered car doing Geneva → Verbier in January (three hours of Alpine driving, snow, potential traffic around Martigny) would easily cost CHF 900 to CHF 1,200. Our flat rate is CHF 550 in an E-Class and CHF 620 in a V-Class with room for all the ski bags. Snow chains are on board from 1 November to 30 April, winter tyres are mandatory and fitted to every vehicle, and drivers know the approach to every major resort — Verbier, Crans-Montana, Les Diablerets, Villars, Nendaz, Saas-Fee, Zermatt on the Swiss side; Chamonix, Megève, Les Gets, Flaine, Tignes, Val d’Isère, Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens on the French side.

Frequently Asked Questions — Geneva Taxi Prices
How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to the city centre?
A metered street taxi runs CHF 35 to CHF 55 for the 4 km trip from Geneva Airport to the city centre, depending on time of day and traffic. Our fixed-rate TaxiGVA transfer starts at CHF 100 in a Mercedes E-Class with flight tracking, meet & greet inside the terminal and 60 minutes of waiting time included.
Why is a pre-booked private car more expensive than a street taxi for short trips?
A street taxi picks up anyone on the pavement and charges by the meter. A private-hire car is dispatched specifically for you, tracks your flight, waits with a name sign and uses a specific vehicle class. For a 4 km ride this service layer is overkill for most people, which is why we set the city minimum at CHF 80 — it only makes sense when you need the reliability, not just transportation.
Do Geneva taxi prices change at night or on Sundays?
Street-taxi meters add CHF 0.60/km between 21:00 and 06:00 and run the day tariff on Sundays. TaxiGVA fixed prices are the same 24/7, every day of the year, including 25 December and 1 January. What you book in April is what you pay at 03:00 on New Year’s Eve.
Is the Swiss motorway vignette included in the taxi price?
Yes, always. Every TaxiGVA vehicle has the current-year vignette (CHF 40) pre-paid and displayed on the windscreen. You never pay extra for it. French motorway tolls on cross-border trips (Geneva → Chamonix, Geneva → Paris) are also included in the quoted fare.
How much should I tip a taxi driver in Geneva?
Tipping is not expected in Switzerland — service is always included in the price. Drivers appreciate a tip when the service was beyond the standard (help with heavy luggage, extra stops, long wait), but there is no social pressure to tip. If you want to round up, 5 to 10 % is the common range.
Can I pay with a foreign credit card or in euros?
Yes. All major cards are accepted in every vehicle (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Maestro). Cash is accepted in CHF, EUR, USD and GBP at the daily exchange rate. TWINT (Swiss instant-pay app) and Apple/Google Pay work too. For corporate accounts we invoice on 30-day terms in CHF or EUR.
What happens to the fixed price if my flight is delayed by three hours?
Nothing. We track your flight in real time via the flight number you gave us at booking. Pickup time is adjusted automatically, the driver shows up when you actually land, and the fare stays at the quoted amount. The first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free; beyond that we bill CHF 60/hour in 15-minute slices.
Are child seats free?
Yes, on request. We provide rear-facing seats, forward-facing seats and booster cushions at no extra charge. Specify the age and weight of each child when you book so we fit the right model. See our dedicated Geneva family taxi with child seats page for the full setup.
Is a private car more expensive than the train for Geneva → Lausanne?
Yes — the train is CHF 29 second class, 45 minutes, every 15 minutes. The taxi is CHF 280 for up to three people or CHF 320 for up to seven, door-to-door with luggage. The train wins on solo travel with light luggage; the taxi wins on groups, early-morning flights, heavy luggage, corporate travel or when you have a meeting the moment you arrive.
Can I get a VAT invoice for a business trip?
Yes — all TaxiGVA rides come with an automatic email invoice with VAT (8.1 % Swiss standard rate) broken out separately. For corporate accounts we consolidate on a monthly invoice per company or per cost centre. Ask at booking and we set it up before the first trip.
